Bamboo Care

Bamboo doesn't need much from you.

What much and how much will depend on where you're trying to keep it.

The main concerns are Water and Food

Water

Keep the soil moist. Keep the soil moist. Say it with me. Keep the soil moist.

That's not wet. Moist. Not dry.

To establish how much water and how often, try this:

  1. Get the soil (or potting mix) wet.  Properly, couldn't hold any more water, wet. You may need to use a wetting agent or water a few times in a day to get to that point.

  2. Check the soil moisture the next day. Dig in about 50mm and note the colour and feel of the soil.

  3. Repeat each day until you notice a change in colour and feel that suggests the soil is going from moist to dry. Do your watering and note how much and how long since the last watering.

  4. Repeat the checking and watering  until the how much and how often is consistent.

Consider an automatic irrigation system, particularly for pots and planters, if your attention is likely to be elsewhere.

For newly planted bamboo, some extra care is advised.

Until new roots have grown into the surrounding soil, your bamboo cannot obtain moisture from the surrounding soil.

Meaning, until established, be careful to apply water to the rootball zone of your new bamboo.

Food

When it comes to fertilising, you've got options.

GF, Paleo, Modern American ... CRF, slow release, liquid, pellet, granual, prill ... there's more ...

You could try one of the following diets.

if you're growing in a Potting Mix, imported soil blend or other Soilless Growing Media

Osmocote and Seasol, as per the label instructions

If you're in a mineral soil

a good layer of compost each year; and

Dynamic Lifter at the start of Spring, start of Summer and end of Summer.

Better growers would have a more rounded diet, but hey ...
